After I had finished photographing the monks' sculptures, I noticed a lovely painting on the wall facing the sculptures. Of course, I had to photograph it. The local artist is JoAn Melchild.

I met JoAn via email in 2008. She asked my permission to use a Great Blue Heron photograph I had taken following a very strong windstorm at the Big Stone Lake Wildlife Refuge, just south of Ortonville, MN.  First, my photo of the bedraggled Heron.

Next is JoAn's depiction.

I prefer JoAn's. It emphasizes the characteristics of the Heron and stones while eliminating unnecessary details.

Sculpture at Blue Cloud Abbey

During a recent visit to Blue Cloud Abbey, I was pleasantly surprised to find an extensive exhibit of sculptures created by two of the monks, Br. Sebastian Goldade and Br. James Hanson. Some have been sold -- others are available. You may contact the monks through Blue Cloud Abbey, Box 98, Marvin, SD  57251-0098  605-398-9200

Christ is risen!

Easter Vigil

This is the night, when Christ broke the bonds of death and hell, and rose victorious from the grave.
How wonderful and beyond our knowing, O God, is your mercy and loving-kindness to us, that to redeem a slave, you gave a son.
How blessed is this night, when earth and heaven are joined and man is reconciled to God.
Holy Father, accept our evening sacrifice, the offering of this candle in your honor. May it shine continually to drive away all darkness. May Christ, the Morning Star who knows no setting, find it ever burning -- he who gives his light to all creation, and who lives and reigns for ever and ever.  Amen.
