straight path

In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.
-- Proverbs 3:6

today is the day

"Brothers, up till now we have done nothing at all: so let us begin today." It was to himself that Saint Francis addressed this counsel; let us humbly make it our own. How true it is that we have done nothing – or very little – as yet! One year follows another without our asking ourselves what we could have made of them. Hasn't there been anything to change, to add or take away from our way of behaving?
All we have is the present moment: so let us keep a watch over it and live it as though it were a treasure entrusted to us. Time doesn't belong to us; don't let us waste it.
-- Saint [Padre] Pio

Wanda's Donut Shop

Wanda said she served thousands of donuts prepared in her shop in Marvin, SD -- all made with the same wooden spoon. She supported the various churches in the area and was generous and welcoming. She passed away about a year ago.

... she (did) not eat the bread of idleness.
-- Proverbs 31:27

children & animals

If children's love for their parents is a natural feeling that manifests itself in both animal instinct and in the human disposition to love the mother from babyhood, let us not be less intelligent than children nor more stupid than the wild animals! Don't let us stand before the God who created us like loveless strangers! Even if we haven't learned what he is from his goodness, yet we should love him above all else simply because we have been created by him, and hold fast to the remembrance of him as children do to the remembrance of their mother.
-- St. Basil (c.330-379), monk & Bishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia

the bus to catch

Earlier this month I spent a week at Blue Cloud Abbey. While much of my time was spent photographing birds & wildlife (see my other blog), I did take pictures of churches, cemeteries, and objects that I hoped would lead our minds to thinking about God and our search for him.

Which path?

"I do love him," you will say to me, "but by which path shall I follow him?"... Are you asking which way to take? First of all, listen to the Saviour say to you: "I am the Way." And to where does this way lead? "I am the Truth and the Life," (Jn 14:6)...You are not being told: Try hard to find the way that leads to truth and life. No; no one is saying that to you. Get up, you sluggard; the Way in person has come to find you. He is rousing you from your sleep if only you listen to his voice saying to you: "Rise and walk." (Mt 9:5)
-- Saint Augustine (354-430), Bishop of Hippo (North Africa)
